Solas
In six short years Solas has made a major impact in both America and abroad as an Irish music supergroup whose albums and live shows are among the finest and most exciting musical experiences anywhere. Led by multi-instrumentalist Seamus Egan, they interpret a wide range of material in surprising ways; songs by contemporary artists are given a Celtic tinge, making explicit their connections with the deep ultimately Celtic roots of American music.
Solas’ latest work The Edge Of Silence (Shanachie) is a moody, noir-ish song cycle with a cinematic feel. The Edge Of Silence shows Solas to be one of those rare artists – like Bela Fleck, Yossou N’Dour, Taj Mahal, Johhny Cash – who are masters of a tradition yet transcend musical category. It is a clear declaration by Solas that they are determined to expand the musical possibilities of the traditions they’ve mastered.
listen
In a period when so much music has been commodified and compromised to the point of indifference, this quintet continues to make a difference by pushing the outer limits of what’s expected.
- Earle Hitchner, Trad Beat, Irish Echo

Solas may be the best band in Celtic music; it is certainly the most adventurous.
- Scott Alarik, The Boston Globe

Seamus Egan and Solas make mind-blowing Irish folk music, maybe the world’s best.
Not bad for a local yank.

- David Hiltbrand, Inquirer Magazine, Philadelphia News
