With its multiplicity of international organizations
– the Navy’s Defense Language Institute and Monterey’s
Institute of International Studies are both in the neighborhood
– Monterey seems like a natural spot for a major world music
festival.”

Each year about this time, a unique, glistening event happens
that draws a superb core of musicians. They are not classical
artists. Nor do they represent popular contemporary styles. Their
repertoire comes from deep within the cultures of the world, from
the hearts of ancient traditions, rhythms and melodies.

The fusion of traditional Guinean music with modern funk…
is no mere mix, but a thoughtfully realized blend that could easily
convince the angels to lay down their harps and groove on up to
higher ground.
~ Joyce McGreevy, Monterey County Herald GO! ~
In the past years the music has been fresh, vibrant and brilliantly
performed, often featuring artists of great stature in the world
music community. We are fortunate this festival continues to bring
us such scintillating concerts.
~ Mac McDonald, Monterey County Herald GO! ~
“Understanding other cultures takes on an added importance
in the aftermath of the terrorist attack. This [Festival] is very
uplifting. It shows that despite what’s going on, cultures
can still come together and we’re still here.”
~ Nizhoni Henderson, a student at the Defense Language
Institute ~
“Musicians, each one traveling to the beat of a different
drum, pool their diverse styles and sounds at the sixth Monterey
World Music Festival…Sponsored by the nonprofit Cultural
Council for Monterey county, the Festival is one of the few in
America to showcase music from around the world.
~ Dave Nordstrand, The Californian: 411 ~

that has been dramatically reshaped by Sept.11.

“The recent World Music Festival was a wonderful experience
for me and my friends. You are to be commended for challenging
music fans with such esoteric, but marvelous music. And you and
your staff are to be complimented on being able to get a respectable
number of people to attend.”

through 67 countries ~
